👩 Cyber Safety Tips For Women

Women in India and across the world are increasingly becoming targets of cyber crimes — from online harassment and stalking to morphed images, sextortion, matrimonial fraud, and financial scams. The digital space should be safe and empowering for every woman. Akhil Bhartiya Cyber Suraksha Sangathan is committed to equipping every woman with the knowledge and tools to protect herself online and to take swift action if she becomes a victim.

⚠️ Important: Cyber crimes against women are punishable under the IT Act 2000, IPC, and POCSO Act. You are not alone — report immediately and seek help. Your safety online is your right.
🔒 1. Protect Your Personal Information Online
  • Never share your home address, phone number, workplace, or daily routine on social media or with online contacts you do not fully trust.
  • Keep all your social media profiles set to Private — only allow people you personally know to follow or view your posts.
  • 🚫Avoid posting real-time location updates, check-ins, or travel plans publicly — this can expose you to stalkers and criminals.
  • Regularly review the privacy settings on all your apps and social platforms to control who can see your information.
📸 2. Protect Your Photos and Videos
  • 🚫Never share personal, intimate, or private photos and videos with anyone online — even with someone you trust, as relationships can change.
  • ⚠️Be aware of morphing and deepfake technology — criminals can misuse even innocent photos to create obscene content for blackmail.
  • If your photos or videos are being misused online, immediately report the content to the platform and file a complaint with cybercrime authorities.
  • Enable two-step verification on cloud storage and photo-sharing apps to prevent unauthorised access to your personal media.
🚨 3. Recognise and Report Cyber Stalking & Harassment
  • ⚠️Cyber stalking includes receiving repeated unwanted messages, threats, monitoring of your online activity, or someone tracking your location using digital means.
  • Block and report any person who harasses, intimidates, or makes you uncomfortable online — on social media, messaging apps, or email.
  • Save evidence of all harassment — take screenshots of messages, profile pages, and posts before blocking the harasser.
  • Cyber stalking is a punishable offence under Section 354D IPC and IT Act — do not hesitate to file a police complaint immediately.
💔 4. Beware of Online Relationship & Matrimonial Fraud
  • ⚠️Be cautious of individuals on matrimonial sites or dating apps who quickly profess love, make promises, and then ask for money or personal details.
  • 🚫Never send money, gift cards, or financial assistance to someone you have only met online, no matter how genuine their story sounds.
  • Always verify the identity of any online contact — video call them, do a reverse image search of their photos, and ask someone you trust to help you assess.
  • 🚫Do not share financial details, bank account information, or OTPs with anyone you have met online, regardless of how long you have known them.
🛑 5. Protect Yourself from Sextortion
  • ⚠️Sextortion occurs when someone threatens to share intimate images or videos of you unless you pay money or comply with their demands.
  • 🚫Do not pay — paying the blackmailer only encourages them to demand more. Payment does not guarantee they will stop.
  • Immediately block the person, save evidence, and report to the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in.
  • Sextortion is punishable under Sections 66E, 67, and 67A of the IT Act — you are the victim, not the criminal. Report without fear.
💳 6. Stay Safe from Online Financial Scams
  • 🚫Never share your UPI PIN, bank OTP, debit/credit card CVV or password with anyone — no bank or government official ever asks for these details.
  • ⚠️Beware of fake work-from-home job offers, online shopping scams, and lottery notifications that specifically target women through WhatsApp and social media.
  • Before making any online transaction, verify the website URL — look for "https://" and avoid making payments on unknown or unverified platforms.
  • If you are defrauded online, immediately call the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 to report and try to freeze the fraudulent transaction.
📱 7. Secure Your Devices and Social Media Accounts
  • Use strong, unique passwords for every account and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on all social media, email, and banking apps.
  • 🚫Never use public Wi-Fi for banking transactions or logging into personal accounts — public networks can be monitored by cybercriminals.
  • Regularly check active login sessions on your social media and email accounts and log out from any unrecognised device immediately.
  • Install a trusted antivirus and security app on your smartphone and keep all apps and the operating system updated to the latest version.
⚖️ 8. Know Your Legal Rights and Where to Report
  • Cyber crimes against women are covered under IT Act 2000, IPC Sections 354A/354C/354D/499/509, and other laws — you have full legal protection.
  • File a complaint at your nearest police station or cyber cell — you can also approach a woman officer if you are uncomfortable speaking to a male officer.
  • Report online crimes at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal: cybercrime.gov.in — a dedicated section for crimes against women and children is available.
  • For immediate guidance and support, call our 24×7 Helpline: 9311159707 — Akhil Bhartiya Cyber Suraksha Sangathan is always here to help you.
